Fortunately or unfortunately, the pesticide treatments of our childhood no longer work on lice. They have become immune! There are some really effective natural treatments out there, but none of them work alone. Effective treatment requires really thorough combing with a metal lice comb. The best nit comb out there is the Nit Free Terminator Lice Comb (all the professionals use it).

Here are two very effective natural products:
-LiceLogic Clear & Free Natural Lice Treatment Shampoo For Lice & Nit Removal
-Schooltime Shampoo for Lice & Nit Removal

1.) Apply treatment shampoo to very wet hair and lather for 10-15 min, making sure to pay attention to baby hairs, behind the ears, and the back of the head.
2.) Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 1 hour.
3.) Comb out. Should be done with lots of conditioner. Pantene works really well and lice hate it.
4.) Repeat process for 3 days and then 7 days later. Monitor hair for 2 weeks after last treatment.

In addition to treatment, some housekeeping should be done. You don’t have to go overboard as lice can only live off a human hose for 24-36 hours.

1.) Change sheets on any bed the infested person might have slept in, in the last 24 hours. Wash and Dry in HOT temperatures. If you lay on comforters or bedspreads, they can be removed from the bed for 24 hours or thrown into the dryer for 30 to 45 minutes on high heat.
2.) Combs, brushes, and hair ties used in the last 24 hours can be cleaned by any of the following methods:
a.) Place in alcohol, ammonia, or a solution made from lice treatmentshampoo and water—and allow them to soak for a minimum of two hours.
b.) Put into boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes.
c.) Put in a Ziploc bag and place in freezer overnight.
d.) Place in your dishwasher on a hot cycle.
e.) Simply don’t use them for 24-36 hours.

3.) Run a light vacuum on areas where child frequently sits or lays, including floors, furniture, auto, and other upholstered items (including your car). In the absence of a vacuum cleaner, you may use a lint remover brush on sofa, etc., or throw a sheet over the item for 36 hours. there are also sprays that are effective, such as one made by Licelogic.

4.)  If your child sleeps with a stuffed animal or blanket, be sure to put them in the hot dryer for at least 30 minutes.

5.)  Provide child with clean pajamas and bath towel.

Be a friend and tell a friend. Notify your child’s school and any close friends who may have been in contact with your child. Remember, it is not just where the child got lice, but who the child gave it to as well. Failing to notify contacts could put your child at risk for re-infestation.

Make head checks a part of your weekly routine. Early detection is the onlyway to stop Head Lice from escalating or spreading!

To avoid reinfestation, long hair should be pulled back while at school. Lice also like clean hair, so hair products of all kinds are very unappealing to lice. Leave in conditioner, hairspray, mousse - can all be helpful in preventing lice. Essential oils can also be helpful in preventing spread (tea tree, eucalyptus, and lavender have all been shown to be effective- always dilute oils before use on skin.

If one member of your household has lice, everyone needs a thorough check. Even if no lice are found on other family members, everyone in the house should be treated with the treatment shampoo for an hour as a precaution.
